The Difficulty Of Birthdays

We recently helped our clients at DK celebrate their 50th birthday at BAFTA. They asked us to create a video installation and immersive experience to dress the walls of the impressive Ray Dolby room. So we came up with a montage film that captured the huge variety of DK output, from filo pastry to the pharaohs.

It was a fabulous evening, full of good energy, uplifting speeches and most importantly, an eye to the future.

We’ve helped on quite a few birthdays over the years. From the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society to the relatively spring chicken Agile Business Consortium who is only 30 this year.

Birthdays are funny things. They tend to mean an awful lot to the organisation – the pride in the idea that the company has endured for so long and enjoyed continued success. But to the rest of the world it’s a tiny bit of information that isn’t that interesting.

What is interesting is what you do next. For DK, that’s means talking a little bit about what’s been achieved to date (they are one of the world’s most successful global non-fiction publishers!), before moving swiftly on to talking about what they are going to do in the years to come. How the world is changing and how their belief in expert knowledge combined with high quality visual storytelling is of vital importance in today’s world of fake news, AI generated plausible content and the dregs of internet opinion.

Corporate birthdays are just milestones on the journey to a bigger, bolder and brighter future. Happy birthday DK and here’s to the next 50!
